A Decade of Growth: The Evolution of the Irish Open Data Portal

Ten years ago, Data.gov.ie launched as a modest platform with a bold vision: to make Ireland’s public data open and accessible. A decade later, it has grown into a cornerstone of the country’s data ecosystem, now offering over 20,000 datasets. This milestone reflects not only the platform’s evolution but also the growing role of open data in driving transparency, innovation, and informed decision-making across Ireland.

Take a look back at the journey of Data.gov.ie through these snapshots of its home page over the years, capturing the platform’s expanding dataset offerings and evolving design. Each image tells a story of growth and adaptation in response to Ireland’s open data needs.

August 2014 – A Modest Launch with 419 Datasets

The portal was launched in the summer of 2014 with a modest design and basic functionality, offering 419 datasets at the outset. Notably, the home page did not yet include a dataset counter, reflecting the platform’s early, straightforward approach to open data.

Sept 2015 – Reaching 1,000 Datasets and a New Design

In 2015, Data.gov.ie stood out for its government backing and clear strategy for transparency. By September 2015, the portal had surpassed 1,000 datasets from 86 publishers, marking its first major milestone. The design was updated to reflect the creation of the Open Data Unit, with a new logo, colour palette, and a more modern style. This user-friendly and well-structured portal focused on providing high-quality, machine-readable data, aligned with EU open data standards, ensuring its rapid growth and positioning it as a leading example in Europe.

Sept 2016 – Enhanced Navigation and New Features

In September 2026, the platform underwent a significant update, introducing color-coded categories for easier navigation. New sections, including “Resources”, “About Us”, and “More”, were added to the menu to organise the growing content and align with evolving trends in user experience.

June 2017 – Surpassing 5,000 Datasets and Introducing Visualisations

Nearly a year later, the platform celebrated a major milestone, reaching 5,000 datasets as the number of publishers expanded to 97. This period also saw the introduction of data visualisations and new sections on the home page, enhancing user engagement and accessibility.

April 2020 – A Double Milestone Amid the Pandemic

In April 2020, Data.gov.ie marked a double milestone, surpassing 10,000 datasets and 100 publishers. Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, a surge in data generation led to the creation of a dedicated section on the portal, featuring a comprehensive collection of datasets and dashboards related to the crisis.

November 2023 – A Modernised Look for a New Era

In November 2023, the portal received a major update to modernize its look and feel, aligning with government standards and incorporating the latest design trends for improved usability.

November 2024 – 20,000 Datasets and Growing Impact

As noted earlier, by November 2024, the portal had achieved an impressive milestone of 20,000 datasets and over 150 publishers. Today, the platform attracts an average of more than 24,000 visitors and 110,000 page views per month, highlighting its growing importance as a hub for open data. Additionally, Data.gov.ie is now fully HVD-compliant, and all HVDs marked as such on the portal are harvested and made available on the European Data Portal. This integration ensures that Irish datasets contribute to the wider European open data ecosystem, further amplifying their reach and impact.

Over the past ten years, Data.gov.ie has grown from a modest platform with 419 datasets to a robust open data portal hosting over 20,000 datasets from more than 150 publishers. Each milestone reflects a commitment to innovation, transparency, and adaptability to changing needs. As the platform continues to evolve, it remains a vital resource for fostering collaboration, empowering research, and driving Ireland’s open data initiatives forward into the future.
