The Companies Registration Office (CRO) in Ireland developed an Open Data Portal that provides open access to national company registration data, including full company records and financial statements. This initiative supports EU Open Data standards, strengthens transparency, and positions Ireland as a European leader in open corporate data.
Background
The Companies Registration Office is Ireland’s statutory authority responsible for the registration and public availability of company information.
Traditionally, access to company registration data and financial statements was provided through fee-based systems. Following the introduction of the EU Open Data Directive and High-Value Dataset regulations, the CRO identified an opportunity to transition key corporate datasets to an open, free-to-access model.
The project began as a strategic initiative to assess existing systems, identify High-Value Datasets, and establish a clear roadmap for publishing core company data in compliance with Regulation (EU) 2023/138 through a new Open Data Portal.
Objectives
The CRO Open Data Portal was developed to:
- Increase transparency by making core company registration and financial data freely accessible
- Meet EU High-Value Dataset and Open Data Directive requirements
- Support reuse of company data by businesses, researchers, journalists, developers, and the public
Solution
A dedicated Open Data Portal providing a single access point to Irish company registration data and financial statements.
What makes this portal different is that it is designed to support large-scale reuse of high-value corporate data, not just publication.
Key differentiators include:
Full compliance with EU Open Data and High-Value Dataset regulations
The portal meets all requirements of the EU Open Data Directive and Implementing Regulation, including provision of data via bulk download and APIs, under an open licence, and described using DCAT-AP HVD metadata.

Automated sharing across Europe
Data published on the portal is automatically shared with Ireland’s national open data portal (data.gov.ie) and the EU open data portal (data.europa.eu), ensuring wide visibility without manual republishing.

Interactive visualisations
Visual tools allow users to explore complex company data in a clear and intuitive way.

Public dashboards
Pre-built dashboards present key company information and financial data in an accessible, easy-to-understand format.

Outcomes & Impact
The CRO Open Data Portal establishes a new benchmark for the publication of company data in Ireland and across Europe.
The initiative:
- Makes Irish company registration data and financial statements openly and freely accessible for the first time at national scale
- Strengthens transparency and public trust through easier access to authoritative corporate information
- Supports innovation and economic activity by enabling reuse of high-value company data by businesses, researchers, journalists, and developers
- Positions Ireland as a European leader in open corporate data publication and High-Value Dataset implementation
