‘Women In Water – Breaking Barriers’ Open Data App – Latest updates

The updated Breaking Barriers tool now includes 2023 data and new visualisations!

The Breaking Barriers tool, developed by the World Bank Water Practice and Derilinx, was launched in July 2020. A major update in 2022 introduced interactive graphs, enabling users to filter by region or institution size. This update also included translations into French and Spanish and improved accessibility options.

The tool underwent another recent update, incorporating data from surveys conducted in 2023 and introducing three additional charts:

    • Gender breakup of recent recruits, employees and exit rates
    • Gender breakups of promotions
    • % of gender strategy or target/quota

Since its launch in 2020, the Breaking Barriers tool has continuously evolved to provide more comprehensive and accessible insights. These continuous improvements underscore the tool’s commitment to providing actionable data for addressing gender disparities and fostering inclusive practices within the water sector. It is important to note that there are over 200 water institutions around the world, with more than half of them employing over 200 individuals each.

Derilinx are very proud to collaborate with organisations like the World Bank, committed to making a positive impact on both people and the planet. Through the ongoing development of the Breaking Barriers tool, we aim to support these efforts by providing valuable insights that help address social and environmental challenges. Together, we are working towards a more sustainable and inclusive future for all.

More about the tool

The Breaking Barriers tool illustrates gender gaps in employment drawing on survey results from the Women in Water Utilities: Breaking Barriers report, and additional surveys collected as part of the Equal Aqua platform. It contains global and regional averages for gender diversity, inclusive policies, and female-friendly work environments. Institutions can use it to compare their performance to other institutions in their region and globally.
