The Derilinx Open Data Impact Series promotes awareness, adoption and use of Open Data in different sectors, and supports the publication of high-quality Open Data. In this third session of the Impact Series, we talked to data users and publishers from a sector where Open Data has the potential to make a massive impact – the Environment Sector. Open Data is a valuable resource that can provide key insights to help protect our environment and support sustainability. Open Data can be used to build new applications, enhance existing products or provide additional context for decision-making. There is a large amount of Open Environment Data available in Ireland, from meteorological and waste data, to information about air and water quality, and land usage and energy consumption. We looked at how the data is being adopted and used, what challenges users face, and what other environment data could potentially be made available.

Even for a seasoned developer, learning a new system from documentation alone can be an unappetising proposition. With the launch of a series of Jupyter Notebooks in the Developer’s Corner of data.gov.ie, developers can now refactor and run their own code within a guided environment....

In this second session of the Impact Series, we talked to data users and publishers from a sector with one of the greatest uptakes of Open Data – the Transport Sector. From timetables and routes, roads and infrastructure, to footfall and traffic volumes, there is a wealth of information captured in the transport domain. We looked at how Open Transport Data is being adopted and used, what challenges stakeholders face, and what other transport data could be made available to power innovation.

Derilinx is delighted to provide technical support to the Irish Open Data Initiative and Portal, which has recently been awarded top place in a European Commission study on Open Data Maturity of governments across Europe. 32 EU and EFTA countries were assessed in terms of Open Data readiness, the span of their Open Data policies, the maturity of the Open Data portal, the usability of the datasets available, and the social, economic and political impact of the Open Data. Ireland scored best in class with 96% against an EU average of 73%.

OD Camp is rapidly becoming the leading event for finding out about the latest trends and best practices in the Open Data Landscape. ODCamp is organised in the format of an 'unconference' entirely devoted to Open Data. An interdisciplinary workshop where developers, academia, public bodies, civil society and private companies come together to share experience and knowledge and to raise awareness around recent trends.

The inaugural session ‘Creating Business Opportunities with Open Data’ focused on how Open Data is a valuable resource for businesses, which can be used to build new applications, enhance existing products or provide additional context for decision-making. The panel discussion took place on 26th Sep 2017 in the beautiful No. 25 Fitzwilliam Place, and was well attended by representatives from industry, government and academia. It was great to see how much interest there is in the application of Open Data across many different sectors. The panels comprised of technology and innovation experts, in fields such as transport, finance, health, retail, and insurance, to name but a few.
